Bio: Matt Mitchell worked extensively in gaming illustration from 1996 through 2005. As an illustrator he painted magic cards, images for the core books of Dungeons and Dragons (3rd Edition), and a large volume of work for the World of Darkness including cards, interior illustrations, and covers—one cover being featured in the fantasy annual Spectrum. 

In 2005 he returned to his roots in fine art with an installation that took nine years to produce. This project involved encounters with, uncensored stories from, and life-sized head and shoulders portraits of people who had gone from America into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is entitled 100 Faces of War Experience and is meant to be an collective exploration of a subject that is often clouded by politics and military messaging. One portrait from 100 Faces was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Washington DC and the installation is currently on a national tour with Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services.  It has been shown at venues including: the Daytona Beach Museum of Art, Daytona Beach FL; The Noyes Museum Arts Garage, Atlantic City NJ; and the National Veterans Art Museum, Chicago IL. Upcoming stops on the tour include the Pensacola Museum of Art, Pensacola FL and the Coral Springs Museum of Art, Coral Springs FL. Matt has also given presentations on his work at venues including the Springfield History Museum, Springfield MA and Harvard University, Cambridge MA.

Currently he's working on a series of drawings, paintings, and sculptures with the working title People in General. This body of work is about the challenges of visualizing humanity as a whole. It is an attempt to see the human face in a way that goes beyond beyond personal history; beyond any sense of borders.
